Healthy Gums, Healthy Mouth
A healthy mouth is about more than just healthy teeth – your gums are just as important. At Bols Tandartsen, our dental hygienists and (periodontal) prevention assistants are here to help you achieve and maintain healthy gums.
During a visit, we remove tartar and biofilm and check for early signs of gum problems. This is crucial, as tartar can lead to inflammation and even bone loss around your teeth. Since these issues often develop without noticeable symptoms, it’s wise to schedule regular check-ups. This way, you can prevent more serious problems and keep your mouth healthy.
What Does a Dental Hygienist Do at Bols Tandartsen?
At Bols Tandartsen, our dental hygienists and (Paro)prevention assistants are key members of our dental care team. They provide high-quality, personalized oral care tailored to your individual needs. Through a range of preventive treatments, they help prevent oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease. Common procedures include removing tartar, applying fluoride, and placing sealants.
Periodic Periodontal Screening (PPS) – Mapping Your Gum Health
We use Periodic Periodontal Screening (PPS) to accurately assess the health of your gums. This method involves measuring the depth of the “pockets” — the small spaces between your teeth and gums. The deeper the pocket, the greater the risk of inflammation and bone loss.
Based on these measurements, you’ll receive a PPS score that indicates your gum health:
-
PPS 1: Healthy gums or mild, reversible inflammation
-
PPS 2: Moderate inflammation with 4–5 mm pockets
-
PPS 3: Severe inflammation or early periodontitis with pockets of 6 mm or more
Depending on your score, we’ll create a customized treatment plan and provide the appropriate follow-up care. In cases of more severe gum disease, a referral to a specialist such as a periodontist may be recommended.
GBT: The Latest Method for Gentle Yet Thorough Cleaning
At Bols Tandartsen, we work with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) – an innovative and comfortable technique for effectively removing biofilm (bacterial plaque) and tartar.
First, we use a special dye to highlight the biofilm on your teeth. Then, we clean your teeth gently using a combination of water and a fine powder. This approach is not only highly effective but also safe for your teeth, gums, and dental restorations. GBT is ideal for both preventive care and for treating sensitive areas, including exposed tooth roots and dental implants.

I’d prefer to always be treated by the same dentist, is that possible?

Absolutely! We use a completely safe whitening method that works gradually but effectively. Feel free to ask your practitioner for more information.
How often should I visit the dentist?
How often you need to visit our practice depends on several factors, such as the health of your gums and your risk of developing cavities. Your dentist, dental hygienist, or prevention assistant will advise you based on your individual needs.
I’m anxious, how do you take that into account?
We aim for open communication, so please feel free to share what makes you feel uneasy. We can agree on a stop signal if that helps. If you prefer, we can explain what we’re going to do beforehand and talk you through each step during the treatment so you know what’s happening. Or, if it’s more comforting, we can simply chat about everyday things!
Will my treatment be covered by health insurance?
That depends on your insurance policy. We’re happy to help you with information about reimbursements, as we can check how you are insured. For major treatments, we always provide a cost estimate in advance.
